The Person God Chooses!

reckless love

I remember when Rachel (my wife) was expecting our first child and I remember after an ultrasound when the doctor said we were having twins...I was scared. I was ecstatic and I was thankful! When the boys were born, and all through their childhood, there were times of amazing deep friendship and times of all out “war.” But that didn’t start till after they were born… Things were fairly quiet in the womb!

But things were different for Rebekah. Issac was middle aged when he married Rebekah, and there were no children for years. They begged and pleaded with God and God gave them twins. But, these twins started fighting in the womb. God told her that the older would serve the younger. The first born would serve the second born.

This violated all the rules of primogeniture (the priority of the first born).

So God turned the world’s wisdom of the wise upside down. This will not be the last time that God’s work is counter-cultural. God is sovereign, all wise, glorious, love, joy, and grace! Our God is an awesome God and he does all that he pleases and His will accomplishes all that He desires according to His own council. Wisdom is His domain…

So then, where does that leave the wise? or the scholars? or the skillful debaters of this world? God has shown that this world's wisdom is foolishness! 1 Corinthians 1:20

Not only does God choose the second, but he chooses the wrong kind of child. When the world would choose the self reliant, beautiful, smart, witty, accomplished, God chooses the down and out, the weary, the burdened, the hurting, and the morally corrupt.

He chooses a deceiver. The second born was a scoundrel from conception. As a matter of fact, he was grasping at his brother’s heel in the womb. So, they named him Jacob, which means “he grasps the heel.” Ironically, this phrase was a common figure of speech that meant “he deceives.” His name foreshadowed of his destiny as a dirty rotten scoundrel.

So does God choose a scoundrel, a cheater, a deceiver to set His affections on, to bless, to rescue, to give the joy of His presence forever as the heir of promise?

Yep. In short, God chose Jacob as heir of His eternal Kingdom and the joy of God’s glorious presence!

Here’s where the story gets interesting. In our study of Hosea, God calls His people to come back to Him.

““So you, by the help of your God, return, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.””

(Hosea 12:6 ESV)

And its in this section of Hosea where God paints a picture of how to come back to him….

He says BE LIKE THE DECEIVER! That’s how you live our repentance. That's how you come back. That's how you experience my presence and glorious, joyous Kingdom!

Be like the one who met God…

In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and in his manhood he strove with God. He strove with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought his favor. He met God at Bethel, and there God spoke with us—”

(Hosea 12:3-4 ESV)

God, through the prophet says the way you come back to me is to immolate, to be like Jacob, the “heal grabber”, the deceiver, the scoundrel…the down and out, the broken, downtrodden, heal grabbing, God wrestling, “nobody wants" scoundrel… That's how you come back to God.

Don’t miss this Sunday…We all need to hear this message of how much God loves us.
