Gospel Of John: IN The Light

July 2, 2017 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: Gospel Of John

Topic: Biblical Passage: John 8:12–8:30

“The biggest need in your life, and in mine, is to see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. I'm convinced that more evangelism, more prayer, more fruitfulness, more holiness will flow from the fountain of our lives only when we start drinking more deeply of Christ.” - Kevin DeYoung

“Our main problem is not lack of time or resources or the annoying people in our lives. Your main problem and my main problem is that we do not see enough the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. We are not amazed. We do not stand in awe. We are not rendered speechless in his presence.”
Kevin DeYoung

"KNOWING" Jesus
- John 10:14

Knowing and Naming
- Jesus is the great Creator - John 1:3
- John starts by calling Jesus, God, and the WORD, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
- Just as we walk through a gate, we enter God's family through Jesus - John 10:9 "Gate"
- He is our good shepherd. - John 10:11
- Jesus is the "King of Israel" (John 1:49), the "Lamb of God" (John 1:29), the "Light of the World" (John 8:12), and the "Only Begotten Son of God" (John 1:18). He is called the "Son of God" (John 1:49), the "True Bread" (John 6:32), and the "True Light" (John 1:9). Jesus is also called the "True Vine" (John 15:1), the "Truth" (John 1:14; 14:6), and the "Way" (John 14:6). Jesus is the "Resurrection and Life" (John 11:25). He is the one who saves you and who saves me. He is everything

Knowing is "communion" with...
- John 10:38
- John 14:10
- John 14:20

John 8:12-30
- Witness and Claim

Witness
- John 5:31
- John 5:31-39
- 1 John 5:9
- John 1:18
- John 3:31-34

Three thoughts about Witness
1. What He says is true
2. Jesus' aim is to bring people to Christ, not to win an argument
3. There is a person named JESUS who is the SON of God incarnate, died on the cross for our sins, rose again, conquered sin and death…and is the rightful king of the world...and by RELYING ON THIS WE HAVE LIFE... These claims are validated from a standpoint of history and literary criticism.

Claim
- John 8:12
- John 8:20
- God, Life, Glory, Communion

God
John 8:12a "Jesus said again to them, I AM THE I AM"
- Exodus 3:14-15
- John 8:58

Life
- Exodus 13:21

Glory
- Exodus 13:21

Communion
- Exodus 33:18
- 2 Corinthians 3:17-18

Thirst
Come
