Gospel Of John: I Am Life

July 23, 2017 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: Gospel Of John

Topic: Biblical Passage: John 11:1–11:44

John 11:1-44

How do you know when someone loves you?

  • Care for you
  • Sacrifice for you
  • Tell you/post it

How do you know God loves you?

  • 1 John 4:8; Ephesians 3:18

“There are many who talk about the love of God, who are total strangers to the God of love. The divine love is commonly regarded as a species of amiable weakness, a sort of good-natured indulgence; it is reduced to a mere sickly sentiment, patterned after human emotion. The truth is that on this, as on everything else, our thoughts need to be formed and regulated by what is revealed in Scripture. That there is urgent need for this is apparent not only from the ignorance which so generally prevails, but also from the low state of spirituality which is now so sadly evident everywhere among professing Christians. How little real love there is for God. One chief reason for this is because our hearts are so little occupied with His wondrous love for His people.” - Arthur Pink

John 11:1-37

What this text is not...

  • For starters, it's not about a trip that's too far or that the distance prohibited a healing
  • Luke 7:6-7
  • John 11:3
  • Second, the text is not about making the "loss" deeper so that the gain is "sweeter"
  • It's not really about the physical life of Lazarus...he is subsequently beheaded in France as a persecuted missionary.

The text tells us what the point is...

  • John 11:20-21
  • Subtext: "Do you really love me?"
  • John 11:32
  • Subtext: "Do you really love us?"
  • John 11:36-37
  • Subtext: "Do you really love them?"

So...on the one hand, nobody trust's His love...

And on the other hand, Jesus is completely motivated by His love for them...

  • John 11:5
  • John 11:6

 Tears...Why?  Jesus is aggravated!

  • John 11:32-35

So, what does Jesus think is the MOST loving thing for them? To redirect them to His GLORY!

“Jesus comes up against devastating loss and consoles grief by diverting attention to himself. You see, it’s one thing to say that there’s going to be delay, and then it’s going to work out. But now Jesus actually takes attention away from the problem and focuses on himself.” - D.A. Carson

  • John 11:25

Seeing his glory is BEST!

  • John 1:14-16
  • John 3:16
  • John 17:3
  • John 14:21

It's the best in OUR TEXT

  • John 11:40
  • John 11:25-26

“And let me be specific, Martha. I am exactly what Lazarus needs, and what you need. He is dead, and you are alive. So listen. “Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” (verse 25). That’s for Lazarus. And “Everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die” (verse 26). That’s for you.

I will rescue Lazarus, body and soul, from the grave, and when I do it doesn’t matter. And you. You live, and believe in me, and so you will never die — there will never be one millisecond when you are out of saving fellowship (my glory forever) with me.

Martha…LOOK AT ME…do you believe my GLORY IS LIFE!" - John Piper

Pure Light That Faith Has Kindled

“We must be willing to live by faith, not hoping or desiring to live any other way. We must be willing to have every light around us extinguished, to have every star in the heavens blotted out, and to live with nothing  encircling us but darkness and danger.  Yes, we must be willing to do all this, if God  will only leave within our soul an inner radiance (I am the Resurrection) from the pure, bright light that faith kindled.” - Laura Kelley

On Suffering and Sovereignty

  1. God's Sovereign love works out His Glory, our greatest joy!
  2. God's sovereign love in suffering works out our SALVATION!
