Joy: Fighting Anxiety

March 4, 2018 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: Joy

Topic: Biblical Passage: Philippians 4:6–4:7

Philippians 4:6-7

“We look at this number and have become almost numb to it. But of all the many social indicators flashing red in contemporary America, this is surely the brightest. Most of the ways we come to terms with this wave of mass death — by casting the pharmaceutical companies as the villains, or doctors as enablers, or blaming the Obama or Trump adminsitrations or our policies of drug prohibition or our own collapse in morality and self-control or the economic stress the country is enduring — miss a deeper American story. It is a story of pain and the search for an end to it. It is a story of how the most ancient painkiller known to humanity has emerged to numb the agonies of the world’s most highly evolved liberal democracy.”

Andrew Sullivan, New York Magazine

“To see this epidemic as simply a pharmaceutical or chemically addictive problem is to miss something: the despair that currently makes so many want to fly away. Opioids are just one of the ways Americans are trying to cope with an inhuman new world where everything is flat, where communication is virtual, and where those core elements of human happiness — faith, family, community — seem to elude so many.”

Andrew Sullivan, New York Magazine

Bottom Line:  Anxiety derails us from experiencing the presence of the LORD (who is near), robs us of joy, and destroys community.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Isaiah 43:1

We have the way home!

anxiety is a distortion

  • Anxiety is a failure to "hunt the good stuff".

          Matthew 6:25-34

  1. You belong to God... your value as a child of God is eternal and infinate... so much so that HE GAVE HIS SON.   Romans 8:16,  1 John 4:4
  2. You are forgiven...     Matthew 26:28
  3. God is at work!      Romans 8:28
  • Anxiety takes on a form of "catastrophizing".

1 Peter 5:7

  1. You are not a god and definitely not GOD
  2. He is God and He's got it
  3. The foundation for trusting is His infinite "care" for you

  1. Fill your thinking with GOOD STUFF...
  2. Develop a robust KNOWLEDGE OF HIS LOVE FOR YOU
  3. Embrace that being perfected includes some hard things

Come to Jesus
