May 26, 2019 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: The Gospel In Genesis

Topic: Biblical Passage: Genesis 3:1–3:23

Genesis 1:28 (The Message) God blessed them:
“Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!
Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.”
Genesis 1:31 (The Message)
God looked over everything he had made; it was so good, so very good! It was evening, it was morning—
Day Six.
Genesis 2:25 (The Message)
The two of them, the Man and his Wife, were naked, but they felt no shame.
The purpose of mankind or the life that matters most: To experience the pinnacle of delight (joy) by means of the experience of living in the presence of God (glory)that results in worship and fuels mission.
1. THE EXTENT OF RUIN IN US
2. THE PATTERN OF RUIN IN US
3. GRACE: THE PATTERN OF THE WAY BACK TO EDEN FOR US
Genesis 3:1–7 (ESV)
The Fall
3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
THE EXTENT OF RUIN IN US
1. Sin (ruin) is universal: everyone is sin sick
Romans 5:12 (ESV)
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned
2. Sin (ruin) ruptures all of our relationships
Ruptured relationship with God Genesis 3:8 (ESV)
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Genesis 3:23 (ESV)
therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.
Ruptured relationship with self Genesis 3:7 (ESV)
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Ruptured relationship with others Genesis 3:16 (ESV)
To the woman he said,
“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”
Ruptured relationship with others
James 4:1–4 (ESV)
Warning Against Worldliness
4 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
THE PATTERN OF RUIN IN US
DIMINISH, DETHRONE, DENOUNCE
1. Diminish God’s goodness
Genesis 3:1–3 (ESV)
3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
“With irresistible power desire seizes mastery over the flesh.... It makes no difference whether it is sexual desire, or ambition, or vanity, or desire for revenge, or love of fame and power, or greed for money.... Joy in God is ... extinguished in us and we seek all our joy in the creature. At this moment God is quite unreal to us, he loses all reality, and only desire for the creature is real; ... Satan does not here fill us with hatred of God, but with forgetfulness of God.... The lust thus aroused envelops the mind and will of man in deepest darkness. The powers of clear discrimination and of decision are taken from us.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Temptation
2. Dethroning God
Genesis 3:4–5 (ESV)
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
3. Denounce His Word
Genesis 3:4–5 (ESV)
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
GRACE: GOD’S PATTERN FOR THE WAY BACK FOR US
1. God’s grace pursues us...
2. God “covers” us in a sacrifice
3. God points forward to JESUS, the “Serpent Crusher”
Genesis 3:15 (ESV)
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Prayer for Spiritual Strength
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from
whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
