The Gospel In Genesis: He Is Our Resume

June 30, 2019 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: The Gospel In Genesis

Topic: Justification Passage: Genesis 15:6–15:6

Our Resume
Romans 1:28–32 (ESV)
They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
Genesis 12:1–3 (ESV)
12 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your
kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.
And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Genesis 12:7 (ESV)
Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
LAND (DWELLING PLACE) SEED (JESUS) BLESSING MISSION
Ephesians 2:18–22 (ESV)
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
God will evaluate our resumes
2 Timothy 4:1 (ESV)
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:
 God will evaluate our resumes
1 Peter 4:4–5 (ESV)
With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
God will evaluate our resumes
Romans 2:16 (ESV)
on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
The Standard for the resume or “RIGHT STUFF”, righteousness Matthew 5:20 (ESV)
For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:48 (ESV)
You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Nobody has enough on their resume
Romans 3:10 (ESV) as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;”
 Genesis 15:6 (ESV)
And he (Abraham) believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
“He believed the Lord and the Lord considered/declared his resume as perfect.”
HOW?
SO WHAT?
 HOW?
The Righteousness of God Through Faith
But now the righteousness (perfect resume) of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God (the perfect resume comes from God) through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:
Romans 3:21–22 (ESV)
HOW?
Romans 3:28 (ESV)
For we hold that one is justified (a RESUME that validates us as excepted) by faith apart from works of the law(their own behavior....or working to make the standard)
Romans 4:1–3 (ESV)
What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)
HOW?
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Genesis 15:6 (ESV)
HOW do we receive it?
And he (Abraham) believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
SO WHAT?
1. Division vs. Unity
2. Arrogance/Denial vs. Humility/Honesty
3. Anxiety vs. Peace of God
Communion (congregational reading)
Ephesians 2:18–22 (ESV)
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
