The Gospel In Genesis: Loss And The Grace Of God

July 7, 2019 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: The Gospel In Genesis

Topic: Biblical Passage: Genesis 22:1–22:15

Genesis 12:1–3 (ESV)
12 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:7 (ESV)
Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
LAND (DWELLING PLACE) SEED (JESUS) BLESSING MISSION
Genesis 22:1–5 (ESV)
The Sacrifice of Isaac
22 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
Two Words, Two Stories that intersect through loss resulting in ultimate Joy by means OPEN HANDED LIVING!
PROVE PROVIDE
PROVEN: Learning to open your hands “tested, proved, refined through testing”
nacah /naw·saw
Genesis 22:1–2 (ESV)
22 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
PROVEN
At the GROUND LEVEL “tested, proved, refined through testing”
nacah /naw·saw
1. At the ground level, God provides all things in our flourishing BLESSED lives. Flourishing is uniquely HIS BUSINESS!
2. Loss loosens our unhealthy grip on this life. Learning to possess nothing provides the intersection between everyday life and healing power of the transforming gospel!
3. It is at the intersection that all things find obedience, joy, and redemption! In short, with Jesus at the center, his perfect righteousness is formed in us!
PROVISION
At the GOSPEL LEVEL
raʾah /raw·aw: “to provide, reveal, show, demonstrate”
Genesis 22:8 (ESV)
Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt
offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. Genesis 22:13–14 (ESV)
PROVISION
It’s all about JESUS
1. Abraham makes his way through all things (loss included) by trusting in the provision that is from God!
2. The story is about the lamb
3. “Behold the lamb” is both our substitute for death and our ever increasing joy! Looking at (seeking and savoring) increases our joy, our open handedness, our meaning, and our purpose.
4. This is how God is restoring all things... the intersection that all things find great meaning, joy, and redemption! In short, with the lamb at the center, his perfect righteousness is formed in us!
YOUR GOSPEL CENTERED BLESSED LIFE
1. God has delivered on His promise of BLESSING!
2. God provides supreme joy in the lamb of God!
3. God integrates these two aspects of life through trials (loss or the threat of loss)!
What are you holding on to? What is your Issac?

Hebrews 12:1-2
12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
