July 21, 2019 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: The Gospel In Genesis

Topic: Biblical Passage: Genesis 28:1–28:16

Psalm 16:11 (ESV)
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 21:6 (ESV)
For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence.
Psalm 36:8 (ESV)
They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
The Promise to Abraham: Blessing (flourishing life) and gospel in seed form
Land: God promises to save Abraham to a place, a garden, land, a nation, a people that dwell in the presence of God, restoring what was lost in the garden
A great nation and name: In the context, a righteous people (children of God) who will bear the name of God, as His children. Again, restoring what was in the garden.
Blessing: Through the promised “seed” Jesus would accomplish all and they would bless all nations through Him
FROM His wrath to peace
FROM our rule to His
TO a community
FOR a mission
The Promise in full bloom
Saved FROM His wrath to peace with Him...
Romans 5:9 (ESV)
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
The Promise in full bloom
Saved FROM our rule to His RULE in that place
Luke 19:6–10 (ESV)
6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
 The Promise in full bloom
Saved TO a PLACE with a people
Ephesians 2:8, 19-22 (ESV)
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
The Promise in full bloom
Saved FOR a Mission
2 Corinthians 5:19–21 (ESV)
that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Pain and Power
The Gospel in Genesis 28
Genesis 28:3–4 (ESV)
God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. 4 May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham!”
Genesis 28:10–11 (ESV)
10 Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep.
2 Corinthians 12:7–10 (ESV)
So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Pain (desert and transforming power)
1. We learn patience
2. It gives us POWER
3. Allows us to face our sin
4. Leads to an encounter with God
Genesis 28:12–15 (ESV)
Gospel Encounter with God
And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14 Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
Gospel Encounter with God
Genesis 28:15–16 (ESV)
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”
Gospel Encounter with God
John 1:49–51 (ESV)
Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
1. Seek intimacy with Christ
2. Comfort others
3. Yield to His transforming power
Communion
Ephesians 2:8, 19-22 (ESV)
