BEAR FRUIT

Close the “knowing-doing gap”
James 1:22 (ESV)But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

B.E.S.T. Blessing
James 3:17–18 (The Message)Real wisdom, God’s wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others. It is gentle and reasonable, overflowing with mercy and blessings, not hot one day and cold the next, not two-faced. You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other, treating each other with dignity and honor.
James 3:2–6 (ESV)For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
James 3:7–12 (ESV)For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
• THREE PRINCIPLES
• THREE GOSPEL REALITIES
• THREE FRUIT BEARING RESOLUTIONS
THREE PRINCIPLES
1. We are all jacked up... “We all stumble in many ways...” vs. 2
2. Words are disproportionately powerful....James 3:4–5 (ESV)Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!
3. We cannot do it...
James 3:8–12 (ESV)but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh (sweet) and salt (bitter) water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt (bitter) pond yield fresh (sweet) water.
Exodus 15:23–25a (ESV)When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. 24 Andthe people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”23And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he25threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.
THREE GOSPEL REALITIES
1. Be really clear about the depth of our sin, the pollution of our heart (Luke 6).
2. Embrace that in Christ, you are a NEW CREATION: He makes bitter water sweet
3. Abide in the word and in prayer
THREE FRUIT BEARING RESOLUTIONS
1. We resolve to use our words prayerfully and correctly...words are powerful. WE PRAISE GOD and IN HUMILITY, BUILD UP PEOPLE!
2. We resolve to think (pray) over the seriousness of our choice of words...to ABIDED FIRST (slow to speak).
James 1:19 (ESV)Hearing and Doing the WordKnow this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to19hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
3. We resolve not to use words to despise, despair, or demean others. (Eph 4:29)
4. We resolve not to use words to elevate ourselves. James 3:14 (ESV)But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts,14do not boast and be false to the truth.
