Nehemiah: God Rebuilds Us - Prayer

January 12, 2020 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: Nehemiah

Topic: Biblical Passage: Nehemiah 1:5–1:5

NEHEMIAH IS ON A MISSION FROM GOD
Called to enjoy and expand God’s GLORY: the temple is the place where GOD’S glory resides. The city is where the people dwell with GOD. The walls put the highest value on glory by guarding it against all foreign invaders!
NEHEMIAH IS ON A MISSION FROM GOD
Called to the glorious rebuilding grace of the GOSPEL: Jesus as the sacrifice and the temple!
NEHEMIAH IS ON A MISSION FROM GOD
Called to work, contribute, GIVING: "Picking up bricks" and expanding the glory of God through mission and loving the world.
Ezekiel 34:16 (ESV)
I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice.
Nehemiah 1:4 (HCSB)
When I heard these words, I sat down and wept. I mourned for a number of days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
TOOL BOX FOR BUILDING OUR LIVES
1. PRAYER
TOOLS
PRAYER IS THE MEASURE AND THE PRIMARY MEANS TO DEPENDENCE ON GOD AND TO “REBUILDING” LIVES!
Mark 9:27–29 (ESV)
TOOLS
But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”
Whenever God touches sin it is independence that is touched, and that awakens resentment in the human heart. Independence must be blasted clean out, there must be no such thing left, only freedom, which is very different. Freedom is the ability not to insist on my rights, but to see that God gets His.
Oswald Chambers
Nehemiah 1:5 (ESV)
And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments,
1. Prayer aligns us with the fact that we are puny and small
Nehemiah 2:2, 4 (ESV)
And the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of the heart.” Then I was very much afraid. Then the king said to me, “What are you requesting?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.
Psalm 8:1–4 (The Message)
Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you; toddlers shout the songs That drown out enemy talk, and silence atheist babble. I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous, your hand-made sky-jewelry, Moon and stars mounted in their settings. Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, Why do you bother with us? Why take a second look our way? God, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name.
2. Prayer aligns us with the fact that GOD IS HUGE!
Nehemiah means “God comforts”...Why? While we may be puny, our God is a powerful and colossal Sovereign over all things!
Nehemiah 1:5 (The Message)
I said, “God, God-of-Heaven, the great and awesome God, loyal to his covenant and faithful to those who love him and obey his commands:
3. Prayer draws us into His glorious presence where your will becomes aligned with His will!
Nehemiah 1:9 (HCSB)
But if you return to Me and carefully observe My commands, even though your exiles were banished to the ends of the earth, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I chose to have My name dwell.”
1 John 5:14–15 (ESV)
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
Praying Together
2 Corinthians 1:8–11 (ESV)
For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 11 You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.
