Heart Of Worship: Obedience, the Fruit of Worship

May 31, 2020 Speaker: Scott Ertel Series: Heart Of Worship

Topic: Biblical Passage: Romans 12:1–12:2

Romans 12:1–2
[1] I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. [2] Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)
Romans 1:4–5
[4]... Jesus Christ our Lord, [5] through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, (ESV)
1- obedience of faith
2- for the sake of His name
Romans 16:26–27
[26] but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith—[27] to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen. (ESV)
1- obedience of faith
2- glory to God through Jesus
The aim of the gospel
The Good News has great aim:
Jesus would be seen as great - glorious
 - by means of the obedience of Christians
 - which flows from their faith in Jesus Christ
The ground of mercy in Romans
1:18 - God's wrath is revealed
1:21 - We knew God but didn't glorify Him as God or show gratitude
1:23 - We exchange that glory...mainly for our own glory
Let's recap
1- God is glorious
2- We are great sinners
3- Jesus is a great savior
Romans 5:8
[8] but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (ESV)
4- By God's mercy we are transformed into the image of Christ
Romans 8:29
[29] For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (ESV)
Let your light shine (Romans)
12:10- show family affection
12:13- share with the saints
12:16- associate with the humble
12:21- conquer evil with good
Luke 9:23–24
[23] And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. [24] For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. (ESV)
Definition of "Born Again" - God gives sinners a new heart that sees Jesus as infinitely valuable. This seeing leads to a transformed life that puts the glory of Jesus on display.
Salvation leads to worship that leads to obedience
Observations
1- We are willing participants
Philippians 2:12–13
[12] Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, [13] for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. (ESV)
2- Repent
3- Worship
4- Walk in obedience
