Heart of Worship: What’s Race got to do with it?

June 14, 2020 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: Heart Of Worship

Topic: Biblical Passage: Philippians 2:3

(1) What does it mean to be human?
(2) What is the gospel?
Genesis 1:27
[27] So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (ESV)
(God creates humans and puts them with Him in the garden where they worship and obey -righteousness- Him)
(1) Presence leads to worship
(2) The thread of worship is linked to righteousness or justice
Isaiah 1:10–11
[10] Hear the word of the LORD,
you rulers of Sodom!
Give ear to the teaching of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!
[11] “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices?
says the LORD;
I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
and the fat of well-fed beasts;
I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. (ESV)
Isaiah 1:16–17
[16] Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes;
cease to do evil,
[17] learn to do good;
seek justice,
correct oppression;
bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause. (ESV)
(2) What is the gospel
It's really the story about how God restores our Humanness.
Philippians 1:27
[27] Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, (ESV)
You are part of a tribe. You are not an individual.
Genesis 4:9
[9] Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” (ESV)
Keeper, rescuer, protector, look after, supply, celebrate
Luke 4:18
[18] “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, (ESV)
Injustice is inherited: You are part of a heritage, a legacy
Daniel 9:3–5
[3] Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. [4] I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession, saying, “O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, [5] we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. (ESV)
Injustice is systemic and at a DNA LEVEL
Romans 5:17
[17] For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. (ESV)
Philippians 2:3
[3] Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (ESV)
Things to avoid...or how to avoid conceit and selfishness
"All lives matter..."
"The problem isn't racism, it's fatherless homes..."
"All you have to do is make good decisions..."
