Walk in the Light: Get Out

August 16, 2020 Speaker: Joe Walser Series: Walking In The Light

Topic: Biblical Passage: 1 John 1:3–1:10

1 John 1:4 (ESV)
And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
JESUS joy WE joy COMPLETED joy
κοινωνίαa (koinonia): joy based on sharing close association involving close mutual relations and involvement—close association, fellowship, committed and integrated purposes .
Defined: Shared life on life joy and purpose
1 John 1:3–4 (ESV)
that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to
you, so that you too may have fellowship (shared life on life joy and purpose) with us; and indeed our fellowship (shared life on life joy and purpose) is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy (completed joy) may be complete.
Why don’t we experience this joy more?
John 3:19–20 (ESV)
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the
world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
Ephesians 5:8 (ESV)
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light
in the Lord. Walk as children of light
1 John 1:5–10 (ESV)
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim
to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
THE TRUTH THE CLAIM THE ESCAPE
THE TRUTH
Matthew 17:1–2, 5-7 (ESV)
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James,
and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.”
Isaiah 9:2 (ESV)
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
Matthew 4:16 (ESV)
the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of
death,
on them a light has dawned.”
Acts 26:16–18 (ESV)
But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to
you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.
The Claim
“How we live doesn’t matter”
1 John 1:6 (ESV)
If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in
darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
Psalm 36:1–2 (ESV)
Transgression speaks to the wicked
deep in his heart;
there is no fear of God
before his eyes.
For he flatters himself in his own eyes
that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
Romans 3:10–13 (ESV) as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
All have turned aside; together they have become
worthless;
no one does good, not even one.”
“Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
The Escape
1. Start with God
1 John 1:5 (ESV) Walking in the Light
The Escape
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
2. Start with what the Word says about God
1 John 1:5 (ESV) Walking in the Light
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
Because I am a Christian, therefore, every day in which I do not penetrate more deeply into the knowledge of God's Word in Holy Scripture is a lost day for me. I can only move forward with certainty upon the firm ground of the Word of God. And, as a Christian, I learn to know the Holy Scriptures in no other way than by hearing the Word preached and by prayerful meditation.
—Dietrich Bonhoeffer
3. Begin with His holiness
1 John 1:5 (ESV) Walking in the Light
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
Isaiah 1:18 (ESV)
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so
that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
